Power steering box

I've slowly been collecting parts to covert my manual steering over to power steering for the '70 Judge. I'm trying to make it look as original as possible. I think I have all of the parts except the steering box (and p/s pump). I'm ok with going with a faster-ratio box, but want it to resemble the OEM box. Any recommendations? Are the ones that AMES sells any good? Of course I have no core to send, so I'm guessing I am going to pay a premium.

As far as pulleys go, I think I am going to go with a set of reproduction ones. I see that Ames has the water pump, crank and p/s pulley for about $200. OPGI has them as well, but that set runs about $283. I would think that they are coming from the same supplier, and are both stamped with he correct part numbers. I do see that OPGI calls them 'Authentic Reproductions'. Is there any difference? I prefer to go with Ames, since they sponsor this forum, unless the other vendors offer higher quality pieces.

Anyone have any experience with the repro pulleys?

So I’m knee deep in my manual to power steering conversion. I got the pitman arm off of the manual steering box, but how do I get the small end off the idler arm (or whatever it’s called that it attaches to)?

Does anyone know what I’m supposed to torque the pitman arm too?

Also, is my + battery cable supposed to just lay on top like that? On my ‘67 HO car, it runs through a little tube that bolts to the engine mount. This one does not. It just kind of hand there.

]Factory manual shows the cable going under the steering gear. Drawing is not the best quality.

So the new double-groove water pump pulley is about an inch taller than the single groove one. That is going to push my fan an inch deeper into the shroud. Is that bad?

Also, I haven’t had any issues with overheating but had a couple of questions.

1. Is this the correct fan for my car? No clutch, just a 5-blade ‘flex’?

2. Is there a way to ensure that my Rallye Gauge is showing the correct temperature? I had a shop try and fix my fuel gauge a couple of years back and they didn’t do it right. They replaced the gauge (not sending unit) but now the needle only starts to move when I’m at about 1/2 tank. Since they butchered that, I’m curious about verifying that my water temp (as oil pressure) gauges are correct.

Hi
your fan remains in the same spot

the pulley is stacked/added towards the motor... say on the rear of your manual pulley for water pump

the water pump s fan hub hasnt moved

so the fan wont move

you have the right idea

flip the w/pump pulleys face down.....

thats the image your looking for...

all is good

continue on

now the crank pulley stacks the 2nd pulley to the front 4 power steering

................................................

great fans ,,,, it should use a 2.5?" spacer .... also there is a date on the rear side on the riveted blade clamp reinforcement
bracket arm it may even be stamped on a few of them arms

Thanks Scott

I tried bleeding all the air out of the system as follows:
I filled reservoir, jacked up front end and turned lock to lock a bunch of times, adding fluid as I went.

Lowered car, started it up and went look to lock 2-3 times. Checked fluid, added, repeat. Finally was in a good point for test drive. Aside from the steering wheel being way off, it feels stiff. It doesn’t spin freely all the way. It almost feels like it gets hard to turn in middle then easy again. Did I do something wrong ?

Feels ‘notchy’ if that makes any sense

Wheel going straight. Can I just pop this off and correct it?

So I learn things the hard way. :(
I just broke the little stalk for my horn switch. My horns have never worked (that was on this Summers’ list).

What is the little wheel thing with the push button?

And do I have to adjust my steering coupler to get my wheel straight. If I just reinstall the wheel, the home in the steering wheel won’t align with the (broken) stalk.

Is the pitman arm in correct position? This is with the wheels ‘straight’ but the steering wheel cock-eyed. If this is correct, do I have to adjust the steering coupler to get wheel straight?

I just remembered that the coupler only goes on one way, because there is a flat spot where it slides over steering box gear. So now I’m really confused
