My 74 GTO... on it's way

As my signature has said for a while "A spectator for now, but working on it!"
Well I have been working on it, so I thought I would finally share (and if this is the wrong place on the forum - please feel free to move it Mods). Here she is the day we brought her home on February 22nd, 2006: 5 hour drive through sleet and snow to get to Northern Alabama, then 2 1/2 hours of wenching to get it out of the back yard of a tiny house, and then 5 more hours driving back home. Brakes were locked tight, engine was painted red (bad spray paint job too) and it was missing a front fender, front bumper, nose and grill. Interior was shot, but body was solid. |

I took the first weekend and gutted the interior...

Starting this Spring, I really started getting into the car and we got the doors off and brought them home to start working on them. Took measurements of the stripes for the Sprint in case I decide to put them back versus doing the GTO emblems...

Stripped them and now the DA is done as well. Have a few spots to finish up on the one door but ran out of paper.... Hope to have more by the end of next month to show everybody...

Now the pics with them DA'd... Doors are solid except for a little cancer on the driver's side on the lower corner...
|
Man, I cant believe those doors are that nice.

Apparently I only have cancer in one little corner of the driver's side door which probably got started when the car was hit in the front driver's side at some point. Rob is the body metal work guy, I am just doing all of the inital labor. When it comes to finessing and getting the metal perfect before reapplying paint and primer, he'll be doing all of that! :usa2: Leaving that to the expert! |
Just like any other car guy my heart breaks when I see a cool car in the junkyard. I'm not a huge fan of 74 GTO's but theres one sitting in a yard by me that is 100% complete, don't know if its original or not but it has a 4 speed in it. Everytime I see your avatar I think about it. Anyway good luck with it!

Sweet Carole!! you go Girlfriend!! Miranda and I stripped my 69 with Aircraft stripper, I loved peeling the paint off with a putty knife, but that stuff was very toxic. Just be careful on rusty parts like springs. Keep at it and git er done.... ;)
|
Thanks MA! Yeah, the stripper burns!!! As a chemist, I know all about being careful around chemicals!

Rustie Glad to see it's coming along.

Found some more pics last night of my car when we initially picked it up.... shows the engine with the bad paint job...
|
That looks like the engine that was in my 68 Bird when I bought it. Orange made it faster you know.
