To my knowledg, 63's are a one year only tank. Someone here may have one or try East-west auto in Tulsa Ok. Also, last time I checked, Desert Valley here in Az had 3 63's in their yard.

gas tank

63 vert,

I have a 63 tank that I think is in decent shape. (I'm putting in a fuel cell.) You can have the tank for $6 plus shipping cost.

I would only use them if you have to have the car done tomorrow and Ken at EastWest doesn't have it, otherwise you will find most everything you need through the members here.

63vert,

I answered your PM. Where are you located? I travel to Statesville, NC often if you are in the area.

gary that sounds like wise advice indeed.

doug i am in san diego the tank would have to be shipped. i would have no issue paying you for your time, packaging materials as well shipping and some cold beers.

keith knows!

63vert,

I'll check with Greyhound in a couple days. I think there is a terminal in town here.

Any idea on how it would need "boxed"?

1963vert 10-06-2011 09:51 PM

i guess it depends. does the tank smell like gas or turpentine?
if not i would just go to a local grocery store or auto parts place and collect a few boxes. 5 or 6 ? ,maybe more.
then open the boxes up and cut them at their seams and lay them flat on the tank taping them into place and sort of work your way around the thing covering it in card board box.
if the tank has the odor of gas they may not ship it in which case i would rinse it out, then bag the tank up in a large garbage bag or 2 then continue with the card board.

I like to get bicycle boxes from a bike shop. They are glad to have someone take them. They are usually large enough so that you can trim them to the size you need! John

I get windshield boxes from the local body shops.

I know your problem has been solved but... I just ran into the same problem up here in Canada. My wife's 63 convertible(the black one from the March April Rope Shaft Reader classified ad) fuel tank was shot and not repairable, it turns out a 64 GTO tank is almost the same as the 63. The sending unit is located differently, I had to mod the straps a little, and the fill tube is welded to the tank but it lines up well. Local parts guy had it the next day for right around $100. Her's parked beside mine you cant tell which one is correct.

Like I said I know your probem has been resolved but if someone was researching here for there worn out tank it might help them.

heater63. nothing has really been solved yet. i still have no definite lead on a tank. but you are saying that one for a 64 gto will work? do you have any pictures?
were you able to use the stock gas sender?

heater63 10-09-2011 10:33 PM

I bought a sending unit for the 64. The amount of rust on the 63 was too much. If memory serves I believe the sending unit was $50ish. It is located on the front center of the tank instead of the top so I am not sure the 63 sending unit would work in the 64 tank.

I have the tank back out of the car. The trans needs rebuilt so in car pics are not an option right now. I think I could email you a pic of the two tanks side by side on the garage floor. I am a bit of a computer looser so I will work on getting that pic on here by tomorrow.

The only other major differences were the fill neck is welded to the tank so I removed the original one in the car. It lines up like it was out of an interchange manual. And there is a stamped indent from left to right on the 63 tank that the strap runs across. Its not there but it seemed options were none and nothing, especially north of the border. I wouldn't want a package coming across the border addressed to me that smelt like gasoline.

heater63 10-09-2011 10:43 PM

Sorry I forgot to mention that the external dimensions are virtually identical.

heater63 10-10-2011 10:16 AM

No can't do it. I could email them to you from my phone. Here is my email and I will reply to it heater63@gmail.com

heater63 i shot you an email

63vert,

I checked with Greyhound. They would not take a "used" gas tank.

I also checked with UPS and I got an estimate of around $180 with them "packaging" it.

Let me know if you want to follow up.

Good luck!

1963vert 10-10-2011 09:15 PM

doug thanks very much for looking into that. i will let you know if i am still interested .
