GTO - Judge Clone build

New to the PY forums. I've been tooling around the Trans Am Country forums for awhile now while restoring a '78 Trans Am. I've always wanted a Carousel Red '69 GTO "Judge" and just recently happened across a rolling chassis GTO that I couldn't pass up so I had to find a place to hang out with other GTO enthusiasts.

Bought this '69 GTO as a rolling chassis. Was a pretty basic 400/4spd w/o air or power anything. I have a 400/4spd from a '78 W72 T/A that will be going in soon. Gotta fit a new trunk pan, RR quarter patch, RF fender patch, right door skin, and do some other minor body work before it gets paint. While this wasn't a Judge, it's going to be cloned into one...this is just going to be my toy if I ever get done with it. Already have a stack of new sheet metal to start installing. Here's some pics of it shortly after picking it up and of the rear filler panel work that I started on today.

Unfortunately they don't make this piece aftermarket so I'm going to have to make one.

Well it looks like you have a lot of work to do. I hope you can get that passenger door fixed or get a doner door. Welcome to the forum a lot of people here that can help if you have any questions.

I'm not sure what the previous owner was trying to accomplish there, but it wasn't working!!! I've already picked up a new door skin for it, just have to wait for my door skin adhesive to show up. I considered replacing the whole door, but it actually shuts PEFECTLY and gaps aren't bad either. I'll post up pictures of the door skin replacement once I get around to tearing it off. Bought the skin from ThePartsPlace and it looks great!

I want to use a little filler on this car as I can so I'll be cutting out the rust and installing patch panels and replacing anything that's too banged up...like the lower valence panel.

Welcome to the forums.

Sounds like you have things under control and a plan. Good luck with your project and this forum will be more than willing to answer any questions you have.

Welcome.

Welcome and thanks for posting pics right away.

Looks like a good but big project!

The Boss 02-20-2012 11:46 AM

Welcome!

You are a brave man! I didn't know they had cars like that (rusty) in Texas. :noidea:

AngryBird 02-20-2012 12:14 PM

Boss,

The rust really isn't that bad other than what happened around the rear window...once that rusted thru, it dropped into the area below the rear decklid filler and then went down into the trunk. The floor pans and front of the car are near perfect. No rust in the roof, doors, or rockers.

That looks like the WORST application of bondo that I've ever seen!
Looks like a great project, keep the pictures coming.

Love that door.lol

AngryBird 02-20-2012 09:39 PM

I know how fond everyone was of the door and thought about keeping it on there as a conversation piece. But then then again, it pained me to look at it each time I walked by...I know you guys will miss it.

Still waiting on the adhesive to install the new skin.

Verdoro 68 02-21-2012 01:05 AM

Holy cow, look at all those holes! It looks like someone shot it with a 12 gauge then bondoed over it.

Aus Goat 02-21-2012 01:44 AM

wow !!!
That door is cool (redneck re-skin) .
Now thats the way you get your window parts to see if they are right :D
have fun and these guys on the forums can help you.

Good Luck

69Customs 02-21-2012 02:38 PM

Dang. Looks like Bonnie and Clyde's car! I would have banged the door out and welded up all those little holes. Saved the price of a skin. But then I am a cheap A$$

You're a fast worker! What are you using for a trunk pan? I ask because it's the most recent thing I did to my '68 and it's still fresh in my mind. In fact, I just put the seam sealer around the perimeter last weekend.
Thread here- http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=674986
BTW, I'm a TAC forum member myself. Just don't have a TA anymore so.....

Greg...thanks! I've got one piece trunk pan that I'm planning on installing this weekend if the weather is decent. I actually had searched the web for trunk pan replacments and came across your thread. That's part of what made me join the PY forums.

Hope to have some more progress pics this weekend.

PaulatFast 02-22-2012 05:34 AM

Which one piece trunk pan did you buy?

Paul, I'll have to double check the manufacturer... I picked it up thru a local parts place ( Firewheel Classics) .

I bought the car about a month ago and have just been ordering parts constantly. New parts coming in feels like Christmas and keeps me motivated to stay working. I don't want to lose momentum and this project become one of those multi-year things. I did my Trans Am in about 6 months minus paint, (still waiting it's turn at the paint shop)...although the only metal I had to replace on it was a few sections of floor pan.

A few of my build pics...
