GTO wagon

Building a GTO wagon is not a new or original idea, but you have to admit they always look cool. It would have been a very cool factory option. I think the Pontiac Tempest, Le Mans, and GTOs have some of the most attractive front end designs ever. Tempest wagons are also easier to restore, thanks to the GTO aftermarket following. I've rebuilt several different cars since I was a teenager, including a 65 Rambler, and a 66 Valiant wagon. Mechanically, I had to cross reference several parts. Sometimes I had to cross reference more than once for the same part. When I was rebuilding the 1966 Valiant, I tried looking for Barracuda parts, but there were few if any, because of the model year. At first, the rarity of the cars was exciting, but finding parts, especially sheet metal, was difficult. I lost interest in the cars and sold them at a loss. It took a few projects, but I finally I realized some cars were rare because they were not popular when new. Unpopular cars usually don't have a following, or an aftermarket following, unless they were a base model for a more popular model and year. That's when I decided to go with the 66 and 67 Tempest. It was a good decision.

I found this drag race with a 66 or 67 GTO wagon on youtube.

When I was a teen. A guy I knew in town built a 67 wagon and dressed it up like a GTO. It was by far the coolest car around. I didn't hurt that he had a 671 sticking out of the hood.

At Pontiac Heaven you may see Todd Harding with his Tiger Gold 66 wagon drag race there!

I have a '66 I have had since 1982- that I bought from my Stepdad (who had it since 1970)- bought from original owner. Fixed mine up like a GTO back in 1987. Very fun car. And the '66 in the drag race on You Tube- I parked next to this one at VA Motorsport park before. I have a photo of the two together I will try and dig up.:)

Attachment 279567 Here they are. His has a Kaufman built 455 with Kaufman heads on it. Has been lightened up a little with seat removal (believe me these are heavy), and some fiberglass body parts. Ran 10s the day I saw it. Mine is a low 13/high 12 second cruiser with AC (455-.030 over) 041 cam, TH 2004r overdrive. Very good cruiser, and will get with the program when asked. Nice to see interest in these rare Pontiacs.

That's a great picture. I love the red color on the wagon. Do you have more pictures?

goatwgn 03-26-2012 08:13 PM

They are under my profile. having trouble uploading some more of the pictures I have on file. Some on my profile are outdated. I have hydroboost on the car now, as well as a more correct looking Griffin downflow radiator.:)

Attachment 279574 Here is one with the hydroboost in place. Very good system. Like throwing out an anchor when you stop. Not "original" looking, but can be put back that way fairly easily, and will make a world of difference in how the car stops. Especially if you have any kind of "cam" in it. These are all the pictures I have for now. Will have to reload them and put them in a folder. Thanks for the interest shook 1. Post some of yours when you have chance.:)

Thanks Old Goat. :) Your posts on the subject were part of my inspiration for doing this. Vacuum Pumps and other such things are a waste of time IMO.:2cents:

How many people here own a 66 or 67 Tempest wagon?

goatwgn 03-26-2012 10:45 PM

I know of at least 3 (myself included) I beleive they are a lot more. Mister Pontiac, Teej, myself, and you. Maybe we could start a thread in the Lobby or the '66/67 Tempest, Lemans, GTO section to see? Would like to see some of the '64/'65 models as well. My favorite is the '66/'67 because I personnally love the "coke bottle" shape and the front end of these cars, but '64/'65, as well as some '68-'73s would be interesting as well.:)

http://youtu.be/X99JZmMCc7s Check this one out. Same '66, racing a '68 wagon, with a '75 Ventura behind them. This is an all Pontiac race here.:)

I really like wagons and think the "What if" GTO ones are cool too. Your white 67 looks like the one out of an old ad too!

shook1 03-27-2012 06:29 AM

Teej sold his GTO wagon. I should have purchased it. He tried to sell it to me for years, but things never seemed to work out on my end. I have a book that his car was published in.

I just messaged Mister Pontiac and asked him to join this thread.

It does look like that wagon. I think I'll keep this wagon stock, to match that ad. Maybe, I could blow up that advertisement, and put it on an easel next to the wagon at car shows.
