Anyone have any sources for rear brake parts?
Hey guys,
I'm putting a different rear axle under my 66 Bonneville and I don't want to raid the axle that is under it for parts to make the new axle work. I have the housing, differential, axle shafts, and brake backing plates. I found drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, a hardware kit, and the adjuster screws online. I'm having trouble finding parking brake levers, struts, and adjusting levers. Anyone have any leads on where I might find them? I'm not seeing them in the Ames catalog, and Inline Tube has parts that look similar, but I can't tell if they fit and their listing doesn't show them as fitting the 66 Pontiac full size. Also, if anyone has a junk rear end that they wouldn't mind pulling these parts and selling them to me I'm interested! Thanks, Matt |
If you have the part numbers needed, Ebay is sometimes a decent resource for hard to find parts. It’s were I found the inner tie rod ends for my ‘64 Cat.

Have you tried Rock Auto, they have a fair amount of parts.

Unfortunately the levers and strut and spring guides are not wear parts that get replaced like shoes and drums, so they are proving to be a bit harder to source. I really don't want to raid the axle that is under the car but I may have to. Ugh. Thanks! |
Try Frank’s. He lists L&R backing plates with all the stuff you’re looking for. Might have loose stuff as well.

For used parts you could try Steve Barcak at Pontiac Heaven in Arizona. He's a member here on the board or his website is http://www.pontiacheaven.org There's also a link to his Facebook there on his website.

Maybe... have a large stock of clean loaded GM rearend drum backing plates, mainly 9 1/2" diam A & F-body styles. Disassemble, clean, & build a pair up from time to time.
Larger diam backing plates from '65-70 P series is a possibility, have built that style of rear numerous times, building off core housings to swap onto customers loaded backing plates. Will know this weekend, have a bunch of flip top tubs & will have to go through them. |
Just an update to this old post... I did buy a set of loaded backing plates from Frank's Pontiac parts. The price was reasonable and they arrived quickly. They are actually pretty nice, but I bought new wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware kits, and drums so I'm going to swap in all the new stuff when I reassemble the rear axle.
Thanks guys! |
