You did it correctly, but you'll need someone to host that pic for you. PY will do that. While you're composing a post, scroll down a little. What you're looking for is Attach Files. There are some size restrictions (like 800pixels) but sometimes attaching will even reduce the pics to meet the limit. There's also a limit of five attachments per post.

I was experimenting if the link function can attach a photo in a private message since private messaging does not appear to allow an attachment.

You could post an attachment in here in advance? The img function don't care. When you consider the number of scammers abusing the site, no covert attachments is a good thing.
