The sewing machine noise folks mention I thought was from roller rockers. Could that be your sound? If so, I would leave well enough alone. Also, what is your oil pressure?

The current radiator leaves very little space...

The current radiator leaves very little space between the edge of the radiator shroud and the bottom radiator hose - very tight fit for the hose clamp. That’s part of my concern.
