1971 Formula 350

I have a 1971 formula 350 4spd that I am trying to steward. Mostly stock except for the 4 barrel and manifold, engine and transmission are original with less thank 80,000 miles. Only a bit of rust....

Replace old Q-jet with this rebuilt one?

I am thinking that I need to replace the old 4bbl Q-jet on my 1971 350. It is leaking gas and is not eager to start after it has been run (it will though).

I have a newly rebuilt 4bbl Q-jet which...

My vote is for 1970 to 1973 formulas becuase of the hood scoop, the way it looks. I did own a 1973 formula without the spoiler and now have a 1971 with the spoiler, don't like the spoiler so much but...

Head Gaskets

Back to the subject of head gaskets... Makes sense that a thicker gasket would reduce the compression. But what is required to use the thinner gaskets such as cometic, a lot of preparation of the...

Can I ask why no one suggests the #18 or #48 heads? I have a 71 formula 350 and many of you made the same great suggestions in another thread referencing the heads mentioned here as well - 17, 46,...

Fixed

I took the car to a garage down the street to have them put on a 4bbl rochester rebuilt carb that has an electric choke which I ordered and to also have them tune up the engine. I came back and they...

Goquick - thanks very much for the great info. I want the car to be more of a roadcar with a nice little punch once in awhile so anything about around 310hp is good. Needs to be street-able, it does...

I'll keep an eye out for #18 heads - they seem fairly rare? You are right my compression should be about 8.1 now. 10.1 would be nice, I put 93 octane in it anyway. I do already have a 4bbl on it...

Interesting, so #18 or #48 heads should bolt right on? Do you have any idea what the compression increase would probably be using those heads instead of the #94 heads I have now with a stock 1971...

350 heads

The post by judge smails is interesting as I have a 71 formula 350, so it is supposed to have 8.2 compression ratio. Judge is referencing number 17 and 47 heads from 1968 and 1969 and the 350ci motor...

Ok, thanks. I would not have remembered to disconnect the vacuum advance. I'll probably stay with the the stock distributor setup versus going with HEI. The motor is supposed to only have 30k miles...

Well, thanks very much for the replies, I really appreciate it.

I'll check on a rebuild kit for the 4bbl rochester. It runs strong now so I probably won't be replacing the cam and so forth, but I...

Ok, thanks a lot for the reply.

The motor is numbers matching and supposedly only has a little over 30k miles, but I have not idea if they swapped out the cam or if it is the original. It does...

1971 Formula Firebird 350 - Carb too big?

I just purchased a 71 formula 350 4psd, should be 2bbl carb but has a 4bbl, I think its a rochester from a 1973 chevy 454 truck. The motor seems to run strong, the carb. probably does need a vacuum...
