One weird thing I didn't mention -- that vacuum leak and wrongly-installed choke rod was making the car start to overheat while idling in traffic, since the fix it's not doing that much at all.

Divorced Choke Thermostat (AKA Crossover Choke) -- which way does it go?

Car is '71 Formula 400, with a just-rebuilt Rochester 7041263 and one of those “divorced choke thermostat” setups with the flat coiled spring.
