I dropped one once (oh to be young again...) hard enough to break the fan shroud as well as a motor mount. Replaced the mount and shroud and all was well.

Synchromesh and ATF are very similar and considered interchangeable in the T56, I doubt that is your problem (ATF is just slightly thinner than Synchromesh).
