I use the same style, on my 63 GP and 64 Bonneville. I think the fingers provide a better ground, at least since changing the sockets I have not had tail lamp grounding issues.

My tail lights on my 1963 GP gave me fits, until I swapped the sockets for the "Ford" style socket. The Fords used fingers to put pressure on the mounting hole, instead of the tabs used for the GM...

One problem I had with them, with a 1963...

One problem I had with them, with a 1963 alternator bracket (passenger side) was the valve cover came in contact with the BATT lug (the thick wire lead) creating sparks and smoke.

Sounds to me like you have a stuck float, Gary. It is probably gummed up from the stale fuel. Fresh fuel should help dissolve any crud and return your engine to smooth running.
