Backfire thru the Exhaust?

When I'm driving my 70 Lemans with the 400, and I really stomp on the gas and leave it floored, my car backfires. Not a little pop that sounds like popcorn, but sometimes a huge BANG that causes...

The last time I looked at it, the compressor clutch turned but it didn't cool. It could just have a leak. I'm just trying to find out as much as I can about the system before I take it to a shop...
