That's a good idea; I'll check the drive gear when I get a chance. I did a search on gear prices and was surprised how expensive they are/can be ($30 for a plastic gear!).

No, I'm not. I bought an impact socket to modify because I couldn't find a thin wall socket and it was cheap .

I figure if it fails I'm back where I started anyway! I've used it a couple times now...

Thanks for all the replies. I've had the car for 14 years but don't know if the rear end has even been apart. Probably a good idea to replace the bearings while I'm in there!

How to remove rear axle shaft

I believe my RH rear axle seal is leaking because the brake backing plate is wet. I have the service manual and it calls for a special slide hammer tool to remove the axle.
