Had a buddy who used to make good coin changing...

Had a buddy who used to make good coin changing out engines on these back in the day. He said the trick for squeezing extra life out of 'em was changing the oil every 3K miles using full synth oil....

Those 3 speeds autos from the big 3 held up to some pretty good abuse and most were never properly serviced or even serviced at all....

Back in those days and even into the 90's, the viscosity index improvers in 10-40 sheared and caused sludge issues. That's not the case today with better oil technology.

I wouldn't use an oil thinner than 10w on a flat tappet camshaft. Newer engines with roller setups can tolerate a thinner oil due to less friction. Just my 2 cents.
