Valve Springs.

I was not aware of this till lately. Valve spring installation. Can anyone confirm this. Pic 1 has a notch, Pic 2 doesn't. Same spring.

I guess there is a bit of a notch at the top of the outer...

Here is a good video on spring to retainer clearance. This is not meant to contradict any other post. I watch and read some very creditable folks on the subject and some say .005"-.010" clearance....
