As much as a pain as it will be, I'd be taking the engine out and sourcing a replacement crankshaft.

This could be your excuse to spend the $$ on a forged steel crankshaft and rods. Unless you...

I think his heads probably have the exhaust crossover holes drilled in them.

And the water is running out thru that exhaust crossover hole, which would put it into the crossover in the intake, but NOT into an intake port.

The heads LOOK like 87cc versions, but can't really...

Unhappy We ALL wish we could buy RAIV heads for less than $3k

But, really, it AIN'T gonna happen. Not any more.

It's just reality - they're worth $3k if you actually need them.

Question What about this one (from Edelbrock)

It bolts to your intake and then the factory bracket bolts to it (I think).

I've used it (but it was DECADES ago.........). :) :) :) :)

Question Simplicity works for me - you could verify or eliminate the vacuum advance

Maybe I missed someone else suggesting it, but the first thing I'd try:

Cap the vacuum port on the carb and then drive the car WITHOUT any vacuum advance hooked up.

If the idle does NOT hang...

Wink Did we ever decide what it was?

My guess is the rubber tube that the power window wires go through between the door and the cowl. Right hand side. :) Maybe?

Smile If the tires are all the same age, then replace ALL the tires

If one has gone bad, the others will not be far behind.

From experience. :(

Unless you enjoy seeing your tire guy every month.......

Good luck!

Thumbs up Stud replacement on the cheap

I've always knocked out the busted stud with a dead-blow hammer. And I usually do all five when one breaks. Cheap insurance.

Once the old stud is out, put the new stud in place, lightly oiled. ...

Cool I changed an oil pump like that once.......

But only ONCE..... and never, ever again!

First verify that a pressure problem exists with a known good gauge. AND cut the oil filter open and look for metal.

Like B-Man said, it's better to...

Thumbs up It's definitely an NOS 1972 455HO intake

I've got three in the GM boxes with the same date code and stampings. At one point I had seven of them.....in the late 1980s.

The 485640 is the early-72 and the 488945 is late-72.

I'd go ahead...

Smile Here's how I've done it.....for several decades.....

Buy two gallons of full-strength green, old-style ethylene-glycol antifreeze. Don't use the 'extended life' stuff that is compatible with DexCool. It's hard on gaskets and seals.

Buy two gallons...

Question I'm pretty sure that you NEED some clearance

I think I used to shim them at around .012 - .015" but it's been a few years since I blueprinted a distributor.

Question Maybe the broken rockers are coincidental to the problem

The lower oil pressure could be some debris in the oil pump bypass. That's fairly common, too.
