Looking at these marks. I can't tell from the pics if the paint has been knocked off. Is this ground in there to miss something or has something been hitting and made its own clearance?

Have you checked to make sure the rockers are not hitting those valve covers? They are not very tall, or they dont look like they are. I would stack a 2nd gasket under them just to check.
