Judging from the latest videos that went up...Appears they have the hired engine tech "grasping at straws".

Not sure cold start counts. Appears choke opening wasn't adjusted to match throttle opening, from fast idle cam, in that video.

This thing knocks no matter how it idles. Cold, hot, smooth,...

Not A Miss/Skip

Appears to have one cylinder not hitting with the same amount of punch as the others.

The idle mixture screw over #1 and #3 will be a balancing act at best with the PCV hooked like it is. Make #1...

Was the slot dead center of the shaft?

This one pic "looks like" it had some ear spread on the right side. If so, that would have pushed the opposite side, where the ware is, closer to the guide...

About the skip/miss

With the PCV plumbed in the middle of #1 intake runner....It's going to have a lean miss. The closest idle mixture screw would have to be backed out for it to hit and would make #3 run rich....

I think short head pipes vs. duals out the back is the difference with that.

32° total @ 3,500 rpm's. 15° initial.

That goes right with your earlier post on total and distributor advance.
34°-18°=16°
Should be golden and plenty safe enough for a pump gas street engine....

My thoughts on that,

.001" clearance during assembly wouldn't be there with the engine running on the power stroke.
OP's engine knocks at slow idle but doesn't at the same speed spinning it with...

Messy job but I think I'd have to get the palm of my hand on the rockers just to see before swinging the engine to look inside.

Definately needs ruled out before the exploratory surgery begins.

In the dyno video it appears the engine had short head pipes ONLY on the exhaust manifolds. Engine would have been way too loud to hear the TAP TAP TAP.

How long does it take for that to happen? The bad gas sticking a valve.
Carb got primed, the engine fired right off and the TAP TAP TAP was there.
That would mean bad gas sets up faster than super...

No "BUT" Next Time

Next time you do that..... scribe a mark on the distributor base and block. Also note where the rotor button is pointed. Then you can stick the distributor back in "exactly" where it was. No need to...

I don't understand that. When numbers are "lower" on a thermometer here in GA it means temps are cooler. Old dyno sheet shows 85°F and the new one shows 83°F. Baro close enuff but it was less humid...

Anyone that says "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" would be wrong on this one.

I'd be willing to bet Koerner Racing Engines is doing this on every engine they build now.

Question

What brand and part number was the bogus oil filter that caused all this collateral damage?

It needs to be #1 on the don't use it list.

I'm playing nice

If lifters were in it, it would have built oil pressure all the same.

Resistance comparison would require "identical" conditions: pump clearances, bearing clearances, oil weight, temperature,...
