I have been into the 1970 GTO's and Judges for years. I have actually seen several PHS documents and build sheets authenticating the RAM AIR option on a number of 455 cars. Optional on the GTO's and standard on the Judges.
quote:
Originally posted by costs too much:

I can't imagine where you read no 455s in a 70. I've never heard of that.

i wasnt indicating there were no 455s in 1970, i was saying that ive never read about, or seen, any 1970 GTOs with a 455, AND ram air.

all the factory options and spec sheets that ive seen reference the RA III and IV cars, in 1970, as only having the 400s, judges included.

the 1970 455 was the only high compression 455 factory produced, and it came with the #64 heads. the RA cars had 614s or 12s.

well, upon further review, i stand somewhat corrected. just dug through an old McCarthy book and he DOES mention the 455 1970 GTOs with the possibility of ram air. interesting.

He only references them as 455HO in the text, nothing about RA. The engine guide for 70 lists three different block codes, WA for manual and YA/YC for autos. the MT cars took the 068 cam while the two autos took the 067. they both took the 64 heads with the only reference to ram air being the carbs, 7040278 for autos, and 0279 for manuals.

All the service manuals list the 455 as only having the 067 cam, while the ram airs carried the 068(III) or 041(IV) cams. Paul Zazarine makes no mention, whatsoever, of the existance of a ram air 455 in 1970. Also, his charts of factory manuals indicate the 455s as being seperate from the RA 400s and the steepest rear offered was a 3.55 with a 455 engine.

so, it stands to reason that RA 455 1970 GTOs could have been a late production run offering, as indicated earlier in the thread. thus the reason there is no factory documentation indicating their existance, that i know of. and back then, who knows what went on, people could have had friends a dealerships and had non-factory options added at the dealer level. ??? I dunno.....

I'm very partial to the 1970 GTO, thats one that I have, so ive spent considerable time in looking at what's what with them. and to think i had the ability to buy a set of 64 heads several years ago for 150 bucks. *shakes head*
