Do you have continuity between 5 and 2 ever? It sounds as though you have a bad switch.
Just out of curiousity, see if you have continuity between 5 and 2 on DEF, HTR, VENT, B/L,and NORM.
Then check between 5 and 1 on MAX.
If it works this way, you have a 77 switch.
