Both "running" engines I bought had trashed cams and cam followers. I didn't hear the engines running, just word of mouth from the sellers. $250-$300 is right in line with what I'd pay for a complete engine, carb to pan, alternator, starter, flywheel/flexplate, complete.
That being said, one of those engines I simply took apart, cleaned up, and put back together, same bearings, etc and just put a new cam in and followers in it and it ran fine other than smoking some and oil consumption from crap cylinder bores. I then changed the piston rings and run some crankcase vacuum and it solved that issue.
