I double checked EVERYTHING one time on a Pontiac Engine for my car and it took me 4 months to sort out all of the "variances" in the parts and get things "close". There have been others (Chebby & Ford) I have worked with. Not Just Pontiac issues.
I was very glad I checked everything, assumed nothing. This was years ago when Pontiac offered the 455 SD "L" rods, but even those went to 3 machine shops to confirm why a couple of the 455 SD rods were finished under the spec for the big end bore.
The whole engine was like that. But it ran great at the end of the day.
