Converting a 6cyl to Pontiac V8, you will need correct engine mount brackets as well as engine accessory brackets, engine harness, etc. Have all in stock but new wiring harness, which typ source new through a local source from American Autowire.

ol Pinion head - Are you sure they were TH400's? I know that TH350's were a Mid year change in 69 for Automatic Firebird Sprints, but I have never seen a Sprint with a Stock TH400 before.
Transporter, it probably was a base 1bbl OHC-6 Bird, but the lack of options does not mean it wasn't a Sprint, my 69 Sprint FB came with only Power Steering, an in Dash Clock, AM Mono one speaker radio, and Posi.
If it still has the original rocker trim and Leaf Springs, a Quick check is 3 or 4 leafs in the rear springs, 3 are base 1bbl, 4 leafs are a Sprint, and does it have the holes in the rocker trim for the "Sprint" emblems? There are some other tells like a basic in dash Gauge Package with Oil Pressure & Engine Temp Gauges, and quicker ratio steering. But I usually could tell by the Leaf Springs.
