Black sludge is friction material. Losing all FWD movement means the FWD clutch is wasted. The FWD clutch transmits power in all FWD ranges, so once it burns the FWD, its done. Since you have reverse, Drive and Low may be intact. This is not modulator or governor. You can test the Line pressure test port on the driver's side in all ranges. I bet you find line pressure is out of spec in Drive. Very likely time for full rebuild. If you keep driving it, you'll run metal through the planets and the converter, further ruining hard parts.
