Once they start salting the roads, it's best to wait until after the spring rains wash them clean before driving a collector car. Even on dry days in the winter there's enough of it on the roads that it will coat the bottom of your car.
It's not all that bad - when you get the collector car out in the spring after a long winter, it's like having a new toy every year.
It also helps if your winter car is fun to drive.
