Unfortunately, the two cars in the article above are neither of those whose VINs we know today. The timelines just don't workout.

The article above is from the October 1972 issue of Motor Trend magazine.

Michael's Super Duty Trans Am (magazine test car) wasn't built until December 1972.

The recently-discovered Super Duty Grand Am was built in mid-September 1972. While at first it may seem plausible, publishing lead times were at least 2 months out back then, so it's impossible that the recently-discovered Grand Am was that shown in the Motor Trend article.

Furthermore, I can confirm that the images above were taken at Pontiac's 1972 Long Lead Press Preview held at GM's Milford Proving Ground in late-June 1972. The photos still exist in Motor Trend's photo archive and possess a development date of July 1972. Both of these cars along with a number of other Super Duty 455-powered engineering mules were available for magazine writers to test drive. It was at this same event that High Performance Cars magazine awarded the 1973 Super Duty GTO is Car Of The Year award.
