Well,, sorry you had so much trouble with it. The black surface is at least 85% of the results. To get the truer chrome look the chrome spray has to be applied in the just the right amount also. A little too much and you start to get the silver paint look. Same thing if you put a clearcoat on it it seems to me. Polishing with a microfiber cloth helps also.
Overall, I'd say your results look good! Kind of a polished stainless or aluminum look.
I know for mine, it looks shinier in person than on the photos.
