I know my setup is not the same as yours, but just as a reminder I have a 1966 el camino that has a Pontiac 400 & 2004r. From what I can determine, the frames are the same as the Pontiac. The engine mount holes are also pre-drilled to hold the Pontiac engine mounts.
Exhaust is 2.5" diameter.
I did not find that I could use an x-pipe at all because their just was not clearance for the drive shaft. I ended up having to use an h-pipe, but had to doctor the pipe on the top side to provide adequate clearance. My drive shaft is 3.5" diameter and I do not recall the yoke sizes, etc. The "stock" drive shaft would have cleared "I think".
In summary, I did buy cross members (and returned them) because I found that they were not the factor that created the problem in using the X or H pipe crossover. The help to use a larger exhaust pipe, but do not help solve the cross over pipe (X or H) at all.
Also, to set pinion angles can be another factor that can create problems.
I just didn't want to have my exhaust hanging too low.
