My thought is you installed one ore both incorrectly. Not casting stones but if I recall one of the rods had to twist around so far it almost was impossible with improvised tools. I thought I was doing it wrong and did it the more natural seeming way but ended up with no support for lid. If installed correctly it takes an unnaturally seeming amount of torque to install.
Try again perhaps?
