Not to be argumentative, but to me they look like they could do double duty. The way the flap lays on the body would act like a gasket to keep water from getting under the strip ( not saying it worked, just looks like that's what it should be doing). I could see more of a need to TRY and keep water out as opposed to the metal hitting the body. I dont have them on my 77 and the trim doesn't really contact the body.
