Even without knowing WHAT is leaking, engine and Hydro must be separated (pull engine or trans or both). R & R of an early HydraMatic is quite nasty- usually better off pulling engine/trans as a unit.
Last summer (for reasons I won't try to explain here) I pulled the HydroStick out the bottom of my GMC to repair it- nasty, nasty. I did come up with one improvement to the process (posted a picture somewhere in this forum)- I machined the flywheel for a square-section O-ring in place of the paper gasket, which made re-installing the hydro MUCH smoother.
