Pretty sure I remove EVERYTHING to the bottom end. You can tap the rods with a mallet and block if need be.
Don't get in a hurry to take it apart until you are ready to rebuild. Trust me. This is a big mistake frequently made. This can be one of the quickest easiest and most satisfying parts of the restoration if you just hit it and get it all done since the machine work not a big hold up.
