A Popping sound in the exhaust sometimes is a clue for an air leak into the exhaust.

So now the unburned fuel left from the last combustion cycle and some nice fresh air to mix with it and plenty of heat to cause the burn (popping noise).

Look for an air leak in the area of your exhaust cross-over block-off plates.
