I believe it was all about the installation, torque and location of those fasteners. Ive seen many original cars that have high mileage and still run their original poly. They're far and few but examples are present even if its a low percentage.
It is true however over the counter replacement parts were all metal units. Thus the rarity of the Plastic original valance. Its like the holly grail on a car as is the Hairy Hose
