Original Style Ignition Coil
Anyone have pix of the original style Delco Remy Ignition Coil used in '68?
1115238 Were the factory versions white ink stamped (Delco Remy 1115238 D512) or was the case itself embossed (238 B-R)? Thanks!

They were originally embossed with 288 on the top row with BR on the lower row. The correct full part # is 1115288. Replacement ones in the 70's may have had the number in white ink, but originals were embossed. I have collected 4 of them through the years. Two of them are for my RAI and RAII cars, The third is untested. The fourth is no good, it had rot holes on the bottom and the oil leaked out. I blasted them and put them in primer, but when painted they should be a semi to gloss black. I plan to only use mine for judging, I would trust running them on a regular basis. Same goes for the NOS AC spark plugs.

Here is a scan from the AMA Specifications packet that comes with your PHS packet, it's full of part numbers.

Interesting... Thx for sharing 68pongto!
So... all of the Pontiac Parts Catalogs have a typo for the ignition coil, across all years/applications where "1115238" is called out? How would we know the AMA specifications don't have a typo? Not trying to say your research is wrong; just trying to consider all possible explanations. Finding a "288" on original/survivor cars would substantiate this... assuming you've probably already did this. I can appreciate this sorta of part usage sleuthing! Thanks!

At first I thought the Master Parts Catalog dated 3-1-69 was just a typo. But as I did more research I concluded that the 238 coil that is listed is a superceeded number. The 1969 coil 1115410 or 410 coil has been widely discussed on the forum. Yet the MPC lists the 283 coil as the replacement. So they were already listing a different number for a car that was then currently in production. My 1978 MPC pretty much list the 283 coil for every V8 Pontiac. I have often wondered why GM had to have so many redundant part numbers for basically the same thing. I suspect the Chevy one was just more common and in 69 they chose that one to be the standard replacement.
As I stated before I have personally removed three 288 coils from unmolested 68's that had been off the road in the early 80's and I bought a 288 coil from a member here from an original 68 LeMans. The AMA states 288, I have a 68 buildsheet with a 288 coil listed and I removed three 288 coils from 68's, so that is proof enough for me. I have been looking for years for a NOS 288 coil with no luck, I suspect I haven't been able to ever find one since there really never was a 288 replacement coil, by 69 the 238 had already replaced it. I don't know much about pre 68 coil part numbers, 68's are the 288 and my brother has his original 410 coil for his 69 Judge. But MPC lists the 238 for all these applications. Maybe someone with some original 67 coils could chime in on this? More research on this topic would be appreciated by more members here. |
