408 build for a 69 Judge! Dynoed tonight.
Just finished up dynoing a 408 for a 69 Judge. It is a build that looks stock, but has some punch to it. Here's what it is made from.
1969 400 RAIII block, .040" over at 4.160". 408CID Stock crank RPM I-Beam rods Icon 14cc dished pistons, forged 1/16"x1/16"x3/16" plasma Moly rings #48 heads, CNC ported by Dave at SD Performance. Flow at .500" was around 254/214'ish 9.5:1 compression Ferrea 2.11"/1.77" SS valves Valve spring pressure = 155-160 lbs. on the seat, and around 400 open Factory cast iron Q-jet intake, ported RAIII Q-jet, rebuilt[A/F ratio's were real nice, in the mid to upper 12's in the mid to upper rpm range Lunati Voodoo hydraulic roller cam, 227°/233° @ .050", 278 °/282° Adv., 110° LSA, .530" lift, degreed to 105° ICL Hylift/Johnson slow bleed hydraulic roller lifters Harland Sharp 1.5 ratio roller rockers 8.800", .083" wall 1 piece pushrods Stock points distributor with Petronix conversion Factory RAIII exhaust manifolds with stock openings, and a 5' long, 2.5" pipe bolted on. Dynoed with 91 octane pump gas. These numbers are with 32° total timing. We tried 34° and it made slightly less torque and HP. Just for S&G's, we tried 36° and it made the most hp[461 @ 6000 rpm], but torque was down a little. 32° gave us the highest peak torque, as well as the highest average torque, and HP of the 3 different timing events. At 32° timing it made 475 ft. lbs., and 454 HP peak. I finally get a print out that can be readable after scanning, but now my scanner won't work because I'm out of black ink. Go figure! I don't need ink to scan something, but apparently the scanner thinks so. So I have to type it all out again by hand. ;^[ RPM_____Torque____HP 2500_____415_____198 2600_____428_____212 2700_____432_____222 2800_____426_____227 2900_____433_____239 3000_____442_____252 3100_____447_____264 3200_____450_____274 3300_____453_____284 3400_____456_____295 3500_____458_____305 3600_____462_____316 3700_____464_____327 3800_____470_____340 3900_____474_____352 4000_____475_____362 4100_____473_____369 4200_____472_____377 4300_____468_____383 4400_____465_____390 4500_____462_____396 4600_____458_____401 4700_____455_____407 4800_____451_____413 4900_____449_____419 5000_____446_____424 5100_____443_____430 5200_____442_____438 5300_____436_____440 5400_____432_____444 5500_____427_____448 5600_____422_____450 5700_____417_____453 5800_____411_____454 5900_____403_____453 6000_____388_____443 6100_____356_____415 Average from 3000-5500 RPM = 455 torque, 367 HP.

Nice.....so when would you shift this motor....at peak torque...or peak HP ....thanks

You need to shift up just past peak HP in order to effectively use the HP. If you shifted at peak torque, you would be leaving a lot of usable power on the table.

Also, I checked the vacuum on it. It made 12.5"-13" at 1000 RPM. At 600, it was between 9.5" and 10". At 1700 RPM, it made 17", and around 18.5" at 2000 RPM. At wide open throttle, it still made 1.5" of vacuum, indicating the carb is a tad small for this engine now that it has better heads, intake, and cam.

If I was drag racing this, and trying to run the best times I could, I would probably shift this between 6100 and 6200 RPM, experimenting to see what it likes best.

Freakin' sweet!
I like to see "smaller" motors make big power. Seems like it takes a little more thought and artistry.

Nice build Paul!
Looks like the motor was using 220 cfm to make that 454 hp number, I would guess that a switch to a RPM type Intake even without a tad bigger Carb would have the motor knocking on the 470 hp range. That car's rear tires are gonna hate that motor, lol!

Nice build and I would have guessed it would have needed more cam to make that horsepower

Paul, just wondering what your thoughts are as to why hp nosed dived so bad at 6100rpm?

Small cam just running out of steam. I was surprised it peaked as high as it did. The 413 I did with similar heads and intake but the bigger 231/239 Voodoo peaked at only 5300. This one peaked at 5800. Also, these are the slow bleed lifters and they might have been hitting there peak RPM also before they start to try to hold the valve off the seat.

IMO the HP numbers are great for a factory intake.I think a good single plane with everything else pretty much the same would raise the peak RPM HP numbers!GREAT build!Tom

Formula; yes.
Slowbird; thanks! Tom; Thanks! 155-160#'s. Not sure what springs they are as they were furnished by Dave. They were around 400 open.

Please excuse the newbie questions but what is the idle quality and is it a good street car/cruiser engine.
Thanks |

I think it has a nice idle. Not smooth, not choppy. A little choppy, maybe. We idled it down as low as 600 rpm. I have some video of it idling around 900-1000 rpm. Sounds mean. Just not going to make the power with a dead smooth idle.
