Default Dyno Day 461 Stroker

Back in Sept I was looking for an engine builder for my hurt 66' Goat engine. It is a 1970 400 that had been rebuilt by the previous owner. I purchased the restored car with 1100 miles since resto. At about 2650 miles, after a hard run through the gears she started knocking and oil psi dropped...

I came here for advice on builders and one of the members recommended Mr. Wayne Sless out of Greenwood SC. I had quotes from Butler, Kahffman, DCI, Tin Indian and a couple more smaller shops. I called Mr. Sless and we hit it off. He's a GREAT guy to talk and deal with as well as being a master machinist and builder. The decision was made and I hauled the engine 300 miles to Wayne. We talked for over an hour, he listened to all my wants and needs (even though he knew more about what I wanted than I did).

He tore the old engine down, diagnosed the trouble, did all of the machine work and went to work on the build, a 461 stroker. he used Eagle 4340 crank and eagle rods, SRP pistons and a custom ground Erson cam. He used my block, Edelbrock heads and intake and my 750 DB Holley carb. On Saturday dec 29th we did the Break in/Dyno/Tune at Mr. Bob Szabo's shop. Bob completely reworked the carb. Here is the Dyno day video with results!!

Very nice !

568 tq at 4200 rpm
559 hp at 5600 rpm

Nice 1400 rpm spread between peak tq rpm and peak power rpm.... probably a roller cam ? What are the specific specs on the cam ?

Flow numbers on the heads ? Compression? Intake ? Etc.

Erson roller cam. The cam was ground to Wayne's specs for my engine and he has asked me to not post the numbers, so I will respect that request...

The compression is 10.4 : 1 , the intake is an Edelbrock Performer RPM

559 HP FROM A 461 STROKER WITH A 750 CARB IS A REALLY NICE NUMBER.

Congratulations. You have a good team there and the engine will be a lot of fun to drive.

Old school dyno but I like those the best. Very nice dyno cell set-up.

My apology to the OP for posting the cam specs and to the engine builder that for some odd reason did not want them divulged. The hydraulic roller lobes are listed on the Erson website and were previously posted by the OP within another thread for everyone to see. Cam specs are very pertinent when evaluating a engine combination but they have now been removed here.

Great video and that’s going to be a brute street engine. Nice when all the planning and work comes together.
I had the same thrill last spring . No questions on what the engine puts out...congrats

After the 3rd pull Wayne told me that we were just an intake manifold and a few tweaks away from 600/600...

The TQ/HP curve from pull #1. I didn't snap the other 2... TQ Blue, numbers on left, HP Yellow, numbers right. Pretty darn flat...

Fantastic numbers.

Be interesting to try a larger carb.

What head flow?

I'll have to check with Wayne on the head flow. According to Bob Szabo, aka "Carburetor Bob", the worked over 750 dp is providing all this engine needs...

1) Drive the car for a while with the new engine and its related dyno parts.

2) Trust Mr Szabo and his comment about the carb and see if the engine (AND YOU) are happy with the overall drive-ability of the engine/vehicle package. Don't change parts just to put a slightly bigger number on the board.

3) An example: Mr William Klausing at one time raced a 1963 Wagon at 4100 pounds scale weight, if i remember correctly. He was a big man and weighed another 300+ pounds so 4400+ pounds going down the track.

With proper suspension tuning the car would do a 1.6 60 ft time at that weight.
Lots of other cars were doing 1.9 to 2.0+ 60 ft times.
The car originally would run 12.60 quarter mile times.
With a reduction in weight say 3600 pounds race weight the car would have been much quicker.

4) So Mr Klausing had 3 of the largest 2 BBL Holleys made on a Tri-Power intake.
These were rated at 625 cfm each (at a 2 bbl test pressure). A bit over 1000 cfm for 3 carbs (at a 4 BBL test pressure rating).

So Bill K had lots of CFM capability and the ability to change cfm easily with how far open he had the outboard carbs at Max Engine RPM.

At the end of the carb testing over a couple of seasons of racing, basically leaving the engine alone except for normal maint and playing with the carb cfm needed flow, the car ran 12.06 quarter mile times. This was with the carbs dialed back to the "IDEAL" cfm for best overall power racing down the quarter mile strip. (The end carbs were never opened completely), so his engine did not need that extra cfm to run its best times and best mph.

They were probably about the cfm ratings of a triple set-up of "500 cfm" carbs or the rating of the typical 440 six pack #4782 center carb and #4783 outboard carbs that Mopar specified for the drag race Mopar Engines. Holley and Chrysler sized their carbs to a specific size for a reason.

So TRUST Mr Szabo and run the 750 carb you have for a year. Then Borrow a 850 CFM carb and do a back to back test on the track on the same day. You might be surprised with the results.

Tom V.

There are some GOOD Carb Guys out there. Shaker455, Cliff Ruggles, Jon Hargrove, Roger at C&S Carbs.
There were some really good Holley Guys at one time: Chuck Gulledge, John Reed, and Mr Braswell(Sr) to mention three.
Mr Braswell(Sr) passed a lot of carb knowledge on to his son David Braswell (Braswell carbs). Mr Braswell(Sr) was a Pontiac Racer.

(If you want restored Rochester Tri-Power carbs, we have a couple of experts like Dick B and Mike W to help those people)

Awesome Caster! Gotta love it when a plan comes together and those numbers are even more impressive w a 750. Apparently Wayne and Bob know what they're doing. I'm very interested to hear how it does in the car, hopefully some track results also.

Great build! The video is great! Nothing better than having your engine builder and a carb guru dyno your engine.
What intake ?
