70 LeMans Valance - Many Questions
Warning - Long Post
My front valance was thrown on with random fasteners when I got the car. I'm close to getting the valance straightened and primed so I can get the turn signals working. I need to order fasteners and am VERY confused by the assembly drawings. Please clarify: 1. Is the baffle shown on this drawing needed? Drwg says "With AC & HD Cooling". My car had AC but if it had the baffle, it's long gone... what is HD Cooling and is the baffle used with AC or HD Cooling or only with both?2. How is the valance attached without the baffle? It seems weird the valance would bolt to either the radiator support or the baffle. I'm probably mis-interpreting the drawing but it looks like the baffle shifts the valance attach location forward ??? I'm confused...3. There are some fasteners AMK doesn't cross-reference. What are the dimensions and where can I get them? Item 22. 9431671 (clip nut for the bumper) 4. In this next drawing, what is a "FRT IMPACT BAR"? 5. Same issue with AMK on some fasteners. What are the dimensions and where can I get them? Item 13. PN Illegible ?? (screw & washer assy)6. The screws for the turn signal lenses are not shown. What are they and where can I get them? Thanks for any help, photos, clarification if you got this far! And if you want to sell the lens housings, let me know! Mike |

Is the 70 baffle the same part as used on 71-72?
If so, these threads tell me they are plastic and so scarce as to be unobtainable at any price: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...errerid=160974 https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...errerid=160974 And this picture of a 71/72 baffle from one of those threads tells me I can mount the valance without the baffle... but I'm just guessing for 1970... Anyone willing to share a photo like this of a 1970 Lemans front valance attached to the radiator support WITHOUT a baffle? Mike |

Here's a pic from a while back when I still had the engine out. The baffle is off. My '70 was originally an a/c car. The baffle came off in pieces. The other photos are with the addition of the '70 Judge air dam from Ames. It was an experiment, didn't mount in the same holes. Either way, with or without the baffle or air dam, the valance remained in place.

This was my original 1970 baffle pieced together. The number on it is 478419.

That's quite a gap between the valance and the radiator support. But I think that's consistent with the drawing. So maybe the entire lower edge of the valance is unsupported? Seems odd but that's why I'm asking! Any that's a NICE bumper! |

Clearly it is plastic and looks similar to the 71-72 design in the other threads. * Seems like none of these could survive if the plastic gets brittle. Which begs the question of the value of the baffle.. if nobody has them now and AC and cooling still work, what was the point? I assume the baffle was there to force more airflow through the AC condenser, right? |

Still trying to figure fasteners out and stumbled on this.
Looking for insight here... very confusing for me. This drawing is labeled "Front Valance Panel Plastic". Mine is metal so I'm curious.. .did they use a plastic front valance on a 70 Tempest/LeMans? Seems unlikely but the drawing seems legit: This drawing shows the lower edge of the valance bolting directly to the radiator support without a baffle... The photos shared by 23337 YT make it look like there is a gap filled by the baffle. When his baffle is gone, there is no direct connection on the bottom lip of the valance and the radiator support. I hope you can explain all this to me... Anyone else able to share photos of theirs? Mike |

Does anyone have a way to look up this PN and provide a description?
9431671 It's a #14 clip, is item 22 on the drawing. AMK doesn't have a cross-listing for it, but I suspect they have an equivalent part if I can get the dimensions. Mike |

Same lookup request for this clip nut, also a #14:

Not getting any traction here, but making progress on straightening the valance so I'm back to figuring out how to attach it to the car.
Is this part lookup thing legit and active? https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=487006 I'm still hoping to find the dimensions of the clip nut that is used where the valance bolts to the bumper. I can guess, but since I have the PN 9431671, I'm not giving up on finding a description yet. I do have two clip nuts with what appears to be shards from the plastic baffle. They might work... Mike |

The parts lookup is active.
I have access because of my moderator status but I think there may be a subscription needed otherwise or at least there used to be. 9431671 brings up zero results. |

If anyone else ever cares, here's where I ended up.
The decoder for the 9431671 spring nut on the bumper was not to be found. I had 2 of these other nuts (33 on the drawing) that were used to attach the valance to the baffle. As you can see by the shard, the baffle disintegrated and will not ever be installed.... These nuts did, however, line up with the holes in the bumper, but were 5/16 size, not the #14 needed to mate with the screws (21 on the drawing). So I ordered AMK B-15353, which is the same size as the baffle nuts, but fit a #14 fastener. Net: best guess for a match to PN 9431671 is AMK B-15353 fingers crossed... Also, I decided the term "Impact Bar" on the drawing is the bumper. GD engineers... go figure! And I'm still curious if there was a plastic version of the lower valance... Mike |
