Probably just clueless. Who knows what engine is in it. would want to see the casting numbers on head and block and vehicle VIN before negotiating price.
or, it could be a scam.

MaryAnn, he could be both. I bet that if you call him on it not being the original engine he'll argue with you until you are blue in the face. It's like him saying it's big block 400, if the 400 was it was in the car. You and I, and many others, know Pontiac never made big blocks.
Yep, "original" means from the factory. And I willing to bet there's more on it that's not original. BTW... play dumb and ask him if it is big block. If he say's no but the 400 is, then you know he's FOS.

I go with the both option. Some people are born with it.

Educating people is time wasted. Using your knowledge to buy a car. Time well spent.

Mom and Pop used car lot full of refugee used cars that were each worth 2-3K until 5 years ago when the 2nd gen surge began to explode. Asking 13K for the car. Doubt it really matters if it's a 326 or a 455. Value would change a grand or 2 maximum. It's pretty obvious from the description that the seller knows just a little cursory info about Firebirds he found in a magazine, book or on-line Wikipedia style. The "leather" interior pretty sums up the sellers knowledge of the car. In a 5 second look the Edelbrock intake, aftermarket valve covers, tube headers, missing AC system don't really say original to me. However at 13K, if the car is actually solid under all the nonsense, and it somehow has the original engine, it may be worth 10K in today's crazy market.

Instead of getting worked up over the seller's lack of knowledge, why don't you use it to your advantage? Go look at the car, look under the hood and say "Yep that's a 350. Sure is a shame it's not the original motor." Print out a VIN decoder and show him the car is supposed to have a 400 or 455 whichever the VIN shows and negotiate with the upper hand.
This is an opportunity, not a something to complain about. You have to decide if the price is right. knowing the correct engine is in the car.

There are a lot of well-known "facts" today. A couple that come to mind: (1) All Firebirds are Trans-Am's (I saw both Smokey & the Bandit and Knight Rider). (2) All bridges have one function (to blow up) - see any modern action movie. As to the ad in question: if the price is commensurate with the car, and one likes the car, buy it; or negotiate WITHOUT beating up the seller. Jon

All Pontiac engines are 421 Ram Air IV! (my favorite)

I would prefer the ultra rare ram air VII 455 or even the VI 428

Offer a low ball... then he will go into the all original pitch. Start with one item, then go to the next, then the next... by that time he will realize he looks like a fool. May not be his fault... somebody could have told him all that and he just believed it. But it's their business to know... so work him over a bit and if you don't get a price you want walk away. Or maybe it's really a 400 in there and he thinks it's a 350? Can go a lot of ways but it doesn't mean its a bad car. Just not worth that price based on "all original". So what is YOUR price?
There you go! |

Ad copy has been corrected now to say 400 4-speed.
I'd be more concerned at how the paint is chipping/flaking off the driver's door. |
