Need Help-Toyota Tech or All-Data
I am hoping that someone here can help with a few quick questions that I have. I need to help out a family member with a tune up to them save them some money. I am looking for the gap and torque value for the spark plugs in a 1999 Toyota Solara with the 4 cylinder engine. Also need to know if never-seez or similar product is recomendded on the threads. Thanks for any and all help.
-Kevin

Any Autozone or checker should have that info. Yes on the antisieze if it is an aluminum head.

I go 25 ft lbs, and gap at .042
If they are out of the box OE plugs with the sleave still on, then already pre gapped. And I always use anti seize, 25+ years.

No on anti-seize for spark plugs. It can cause multiple problems but one critical is that it can induce over-torquing. Can also induce misfire if you aren't careful about where it goes.
I use Autolite Platinums (or double platinums if the price after rebate justifies it). Autolite plates the threads to reduce corrosion and recommends no anti-seize. Most or all other brands state the same. If you do use anti-seize, there are some guidelines out there for reducing the torque. And make sure you understand where to place it and use sparingly. Aluminum heads do present bigger challenge but not over-torquing is a big key, IMO. Good plugs can often go 100,000+ miles in modern engines because of high voltage ignitions. Problem for some is that they will not come out of the engine for years. Hopefully the old plugs will come out easily in a stone cold engine. Take care installing the new, and knock on wood, you won't have to mess with the plugs for another decade although might be smart to pull them in 4-5 just so they don't get stuck. Good luck. |

Thanks All
Everyone, thanks for all the advice. I will finally be getting to it this Saturday morning. LarryP, I made a mistake, car is actually a 2000 Solara. Does this make any difference in the specs that you posted? Thanks in advance.
