Default OF cam. OK for a 400?

I'm going to pull the hyd roller I have in the car and was thinking about what I wanted to put back in. Everybody raves about the OF cam in the bigger motors but I was wondering what it would be like in a 406? Eheads, Doug's, 4sp, 2.5 exh w/x pipe.

It would have a pretty radical idle and would need some fairly steep gearing. It's all in how much roughness your personal taste will accept. I've built several 455 engines with that cam and the power band is relatively high. With a 400 it would pull to well over 6200 - 6600.

I wouldn't say in a 455 the powerband is high...it produces a lot of torque ...my engine likes a 5500 rpm shift point..doesn't run much slower at a 5000 rpm shift because the torque does the work.
With a 400 you would want to run as much compression as you could on available pump gas,have the heads setup to match the cam lift either with 1.5 rockers or 1.65 rockers,good exhaust,good fuel supply and carb and intake.It would be 475 to 500 hp properly setup and be quite the ride with a stick car!Your 3.23 gears would have to be swapped out to make it really work well.

The heads are 75cc and right now I only have about 10.2 CR but I'm working on bumping it up some more. I can deal with a rough idle as long as I don't have to idle it up too high to keep it running.

That cam doesn't produce a lot of vacuum in a 455 build at 10 to 1 compression, it would idle much worse in a 400 build. The smaller Stumpuller would be a better choice for the 400 build at that compression ratio....IMHO.....Cliff

I agree with Cliff,my 455 was good for one good stop with my power brakes.Needed time time to build back up.Tom

With the eheads I dont see why it wouldnt be capable of 550hp with ti retainers if you were willing to spin it up and tollerate the manners. May even hook better. I agree it would need more gear and convertor compared to the 455 counter part. And hydroboost the powers brakes.

I remember a video on youtube with an OF in a 400 GTO- sounded good, but I would have to agree that you would probably need some pretty stiff gearing to make it work well. The 4-speed will help-and hurt. It will help with regard to acceleration stall (U-choose-it stall. i.e "riding" or "side-stepping the clutch"), but will hurt with regard to low-rpm, 4th gear "slow-cruising". The SP seems to be a better choice- JMHO. You could have the OF ground on a 114 LSA, which I have in mine. I am getting 16-17 in. Hg at idle in gear (very little- if any- rpm drop when I put in gear at 1000 rpm- 2004R trans, 2200 rpm converter) on my 461 at 10.3:1 (round-port E-heads, pump fuel). My engine pulls hardest between 5500 and 6000 (hits rev limit at 6000). The engine sounds great (IMPO) with its lope, but it is as docile on the street as my mini-vans (Dodge, yes I am comfortable enough in my "man-ness" to say I own one -I actually have two- yikes). I can putt around at 1500 in overdrive (I think that is the lowest rpm it will "lock in" in OD) with not a hint of chuggle. That might not be the case with a 4-speed-equipped, OF-cammed 400.

My 462 with o.f. cam has no issues with power brakes what so ever.

Same here,no issues that's why I figured at 11 to 1 would work ....still not the ideal cam...I'd email Dave B and see what he recommends....maybe he has a go to cam for 400's...?

X3 on the power brakes- no issues ever...and I tried (on a 461 stroker).

I considered going this route a while back since I had some stuff laying around. I emailed Dave at SD and he said that the stump puller was good for +500hp and 500 ft/lbs in a 400 with his cnc ported heads.
