Piston cooling oil squirters
My junk cast rod cast crank 455 has oil squirter rods and I never have hurt it.
Anybody have their rods drilled or squirters installed ? Thinking I could help pull a bunch of heat from the pistons to help with ring life once I start turning the boost up past 20 PSI. |

I don't have any in my engine, nor am I building a boosted motor. But I was looking into squirters a little.
I don't know that the block can support individual squirters at the bottom of the bores tapped into the galley safely. I believe my eagle rods don't have enough meat to run a passage through them safely. My intent was/is(I'm kinda overwhelmed with projects) to build a squirter system into a custom made oil pan. - I purchased a used custom stainless pan from ebay and Im pirating the the squirts from that. I believe that this style is pre sb2 - I think the old sbc also did not support squirters, and as toyota was joining the show with a clean sheet design, NASCAR allowed Chevy to build the new sb2 with squirters in the block. Some of these older pans are floating around, and clearly they won't fit pontiacs, but I'm using one for both parts and concept. Also Ive seen a Honda ha22 I think(jdm prelude) that had a nice squirter assembly - this one consisted of a single banjo fitting tapped into the galley and it had four narrow tubes running to the pistons. I liked this system and I think a similar system could work on a Pontiac, but I felt it would be to difficult for me to build vs the integrated pan rail construction.

Here is the pan I'm talking about. Clearly its going to take some doing. I don't know if this is what your interested in or not, but I suspect if your going 20psi, which I would assume is over 1000hp, your going to have all sorts of custom stuff.

I think the OP is referring to rods with an "oil squirt" hole at the parting line. Many engines were built that way at the factory... not just Pontiac. Dont know exactly why/when Pontiac stopped using them. IMO it may squirt more oil on cylinder walls than needed. There are rods with an oil passage to the pin that helps lube the pins which may be beneficial.
Best bet for piston cooling is proper thermal barrier coatings and friction coatings. These guys are the industry leader yet reasonable... http://www.swaintech.com/. |

Bruce, we did the Piston Coating thing on NA engines but for boosted engines basically all of our new engines are designed for piston squirters.
