Default CVF power steering pump for 1968 firebird

Hi All,

Ordered a CVF power steering pump for my 1968 firebird V8. It has the shorter and fatter style reservoir. When I install it with my 68 brackets my swing to tighten it gets very short. I can probably get a shorter alternator belt to make more room for the pump which may work well enough but I will have to modify my return and pressure line.

I had a thought though, think I should swap the reservoir around? I don't know if the new CVF pump will fit into the older style reservoir and if it's worth the extra work.

What do you think?

My understanding is that the p series saginaw pumps themselves are all basically the same design and dimensions, but the reservoirs changed over time and by model when necessary.

You should be able to swap the reservoirs as a result. You may want to get a new main o-ring though.

If you decide to swap pumps, I would be interested in buying that CVF housing in the first picture.

Be careful when removing the pumps as the housing will dent up easily causing it to leak after. If it inter changes you can use the new rubber o-rings from the new pump. Put a little grease on them when installing. To remove the pump from the housing, I removed the two studs and the pressure relief valve. I then installed two bolts to help push pump out of housing. I tapped the bolt heads back and forth holding the pump in my hand, so not to damage case.

Thanks

I had one on my 67 with factory 1969 style LWP brackets. It will fit, but its a just barely type situation. I did do the shorter alternator belt to give a bit more room.

Ultimately I switched to a CVF bracket system. It wasnt because of the power steering, but because I cant stand Pontiacs two alternator strap setup from that generation.. The CVF system squealed until I bought their WP pulley too. I assume their lesser contact patch wasnt enough for the worn out 50 year old pulley.

If I had to do it over again I would buy once cry once on the whole situation and buy a serpentine kit.

Thanks all, pump swapped over fine, no leaks, and seems to fixed my issues with new fast ratio steering box.
