Back in 2002, there was no plan for Holden to sell the Monaro in the US. Holden Specialty Vehicles (HSV) were just starting to make the Monaro GTO.

Few people, I think, read this article by none other than Paul Zazarine:

http://www.cnyfirebird.com/showNews.asp?ID=36

"Aside from Corvette, GM will have nothing in their product line-ups to appeal to American high-performance buyers after 2002."

Back then, I was still working on my 69 GTO. I really wanted one of these HSV Monaros.

My disappointment is that they brought over the HSV GTO rather than the GTS as the new Pontiac GTO. My assumption is that this "Callaway-tuned" GTS engine is really just a stock LS6.

If the new GTO were to have had 405 HP, I would never have purchased my 2003 Corvette Z06.

400 HP 6 Liter will be available in 2005.

Seems to me, HP went up from 1964 to 1965 also.

You have to start somewhere, and 350 HP isn't a bad place to start.

I'll believe it when I see it.

But that is the traditional marketing plan. When you introduce a new car, you always make the first year less desirable than the second. A certain number of people just "gotta have" any new car. You can nab those in the first year, and pick up the more careful buyers in the second and later years (who will be more cautious about buying a new model in it's first year anyway).

For example, the 2001 Corvette Z06 (first year) is significantly less desirable than the 2002+ Z06's. No HUD, less HP, etc...

It's the penalty you pay for being an early adopter.
