im almost done with the instalation of the engine it's a 71" 350 it has 10:1 compression and a mild performance cam. i have a edelbrock performer intake and 600cfm carb. what kind of ingition show i use? i have points on it now but i want to change to hei or a points conversion k it with the magnetic pick up. are these any good? i have a 400 trans and a stock rearend 3:11 posi. the car originally had 231cid in it. i put duel 2 1/2 inch exaust with cats and flowpro mufflers over the axl but it is bretty loud.

Headers shouldnt be a problem as you can just order a set for a 80's grand prix with a 301, if they make such a thing. Then again maybe they wouldnt. Something should work. I have an 85 cutlass with an olds 455 and i think the only headers I could use are something from mondello that limits my turning radius but a pontiac engine is nowhere near as bulky and wide as an olds 455. Possibly the new hedman shortie headers will work in this application? I have been considering them for my 70 gto but dont know anything about them yet really.
As for emmissions: Here in MN you had to get a copy of the engine codes to prove the engine to be pre 1975 to get an exemption. But now they have dropped emission testing around here and its no longer necessary.

GR-RRR!

they didn't make a 301 header that I know of, and the only set of headers that fit are made by IA, and cost $500. I had this problem with my 78 lemans. But 428GTO is right, the headman shorty is a good posiabilty, when I tried to fit headers on mine, I used 6 sets of diffrent headers on it, nothing even came close. there IS a guy on here with a 78 grand am that used something and had one or two tubes moved over.

Thirdgen, couldn't you get a 78 Grand Prix with a 400? Wouldn't headers for that work?

I'm not sure if the GP's came with 400's or not, but I do know that no one intill IA made headers for it. now if you where putting in a SBC or BBC sure hooker and headman and i'm sure some no names make em. IF the shortys are based on the RA3 manifolds then they should work, my friend had a 455 in a 80something GP and used them. I really think that the new shortys will work real well in alot of diffrent cars for swaps! I think i'm going to buy a set and try them on a 3rd gen, and also try them on my 78 lemans, but that will be later. I really hope some one will do a DYNO test between the shortys and the RA manifolds. I would have used the RA manifolds on my 78 lemans if they didn't have a hold in them I even took them up to have them welded and they didn't like being welded on, the guy who was doing the welding called the metal cheap but who knows!

I had a 83 GP with a 400 and a 455 in it and I used 68-72 A-body headers. They actually fit better in the GP then they did in my 69 Lemans. The only problem was the collecters pointed up towards the floor pan. Heat the primary pipes and insert a long bar and pull down until there level. By the way Im used these same headers in a 74 GP and now there in my 62 GP. Eric
