Pontiac Police Cars

My first Pontiac was a 1964 Catalina 2 dr post sedan with a 2 barrel 389, three speed on the column, taxi cab interior, big aluminum front brakes and wider 15 inch steel wheels. It was originally a Police Captains car for The city of Brookfield, WI. A suburb of Milwaukee. I bought it from my future brother-in-law. It still had the drivers side spot light. Manual brakes and manual steering. I eventually dropped a '65 325 hp 389 and Muncie 4 speed from a '65 Goat into it and blew the original rear gears and installed a 3:90 posi. I had alot of fun with that thing. This was in 1970 and the first big tires were just coming out. I put on a pair of G60-15s (8 inch wide) on the front and bought some of the first J.C.Penny L60-15 which were a really wide tire back then. I had to cut the wheelwell out to fit them on 10 inch chrome reverse rims. Fronts were alum. Ansens. I really wanted to raise the car for that dragstrip look of the day so I went and bought a set of stationwagon springs for the front. The stationwagons had a deeper pocket lower a arm to fit a longer spring. It was a way to get the front ends up in the air back then. What I didn't know was, the police suspension used stationwagon arms and springs and after all the work to install those monsters, the car ended up just the same. So I stuffed spacers in every coil I could reach, heh. Funny side note. I had a friend at then gas station I worked at help me install the front springs. The springs were really stiff and we couldn't figure out how to collapse them for the install. We finally put them under the lift and dropped the car/lift on them to collapse them. Then he wired them down to hold them tight. While the car was up and we were removing the old springs, one of the wires let go. The spring went straight up through the ceiling board (which was not much more than a type of dry wall type paneling) and into the attic above the lift. This was a peaked part of the station building and the spring rattled around about five hits before it stopped. Scared the hell out of all of us and then it didn't it didn't even work out. Anywho, that was my first Pontiac and I still wish I had that car. Still one of my favorite year Catalinas. Mark L

I'll never forget the article, I believe it was in HP Pontiac's predecessor, where the writer had been stopped, in New Jersey, while driving a T/A test car. Turned out the trooper just wanted to look at the car. He asked how fast the T/A was and the writer (might have been Oldham) said they'd had it at 118 on the back stretch at Riverside(?). The Trooper, who was driving a 455 Catalina, replied, "That's nothin', we clocked this one, on radar, at 152 at exit 6 on the Turnpike!"

My '64 also had the giant finned aluminium front brakes. Requiring 15 wheels. I mentioned that I was runnung G-60 15s with 8 inches of tread. One night after dropping my girlfriend (now my wife) off at home after a date, I was heading home. They had just opened a new highway and I was on the old road. There was a highway that used to T into theold highway I was on but when they built the new one this highway was extended a mile to the new one. This created a new intersection that was never there before. When everything was newly opened, the old highway I was on was still non stop thru the intersection and the intersecting was still supposed to stop. As I approached the intersection I could see through between the farm house and the barn on the corner that a car was coming towards the intersection pretty fast. Then I went behind the farmhouse so I started to slow. As I came into the intersection the car came through, had to be 100 miles per hour. Never even slowing down. I hit those big brakes/front tires so hard I swear to this day that I pulled the rear tires off the ground. I missed that car by inches. But that old Pontiac stopped like---right now, from probably 50 mph at that point. Probably would not be here now if it hadn't. I reported the incident to the county. It was the fourth near miss in the the 2 days of it's opening. That next day they made it a stop from the other old highway and the new extension was now non stop. That old Police car had seat belts also and I would wear them every once in a while. That night I just happened to have them on. Don't think I needed them cause I think I dented the floor under the brake pedal from stopping so hard, LOL. Mark L

Someone found this one in a car port in AZ. It still has the original rubber floor mats. It has a Ford 3 speed in it. It also has the aluminum brake drums.

The 66, 72 and 77 were all from neighboring cities to where I live. Pretty neat.

I don't remember some of the story on that car. A little old lady had it in her car port. It was owned by police officer, he died and it sat in the car port for years. The guy who owns it now had his eye on it and drove by one day and the car was gone. He knew the guy who towed it off and he got it for next to nothing. He had to buy the car from the guy who towed it off. It has a Hurst shifter on the floor. Something was mentioned that the shifter was installed by a dealer back in the day. He has tried to find a NOS rubber floor mat and said it was unobtainable.

My '64 originally came with the heavy duty ford 3 speed too. That's why many of the early bellhousings came with the GM and Ford trans bolt pattern. Mark L

The car is still in AZ. The owner drove it a over 2 hundred miles to the car show where the picture was taken. I had some other pictures but they were stored in a computer that broke. The interior had multi color stripes in the seats. It was original.

Alot of cool cars in Sierra Vista,Az.
That is an awesome car!!
I basically grew up in Sierra Vista. I was a locksmith in that town for about 6 years. I believe I remember that car in tha carport just behind my neighborhood off 7th street. I believe that fireman also had a cuda.In a trailer park of all places, too. There was aTucker stashed in the next town over in Whetstone. Ft.Huachuca is the military base nearby, and what happened, is alot of officers would bring cars there and leave them when they got deployed. A yard in Huachuca City, Fort Auto Parts, ,Milo the owner, would collect many over the years such cars left behind by officers. He still has an extensive collection that you can view directly from the main strip going through Huachuca City. I retrieved my '62 Tempest convertible, and my '72 firebird from Sierra Vista. That car was taken next to Joe Krapps's panel truck that used to be yellow and blue. More likely, the Sierra Vista Car Club members trip to the Good Guys show in Pheonix.

My wagon had military stickers on it from Ft Huachuca. The car came from Kansas. There was also military stickers from Ft Levinworth on it. The owner was MIA in the first gulf war. I found a reciet for a battery from 1989 that came from a Autozone in Siearra Vista.

Seems unfair that one department had all Trans Ams.... haha |

My stock, pretty much all original '65 Cat.2+2 also has the Ford 3 speed with a hurst shifter.
And it kills me to reveal this;The N.Y.P.D. in N.Y.C. now use Nissan Altimas as their Police cars. |
