Muncie transmission gear swap
Hello I just heard from guy who runs a transmission shop and he said that some time back there was a gear sway for the muncie 4 speed trans that would make 3rd gear like 4th gear and 4th gear like an overdrive. Has anybody heard of this and if so what exactly is it called so I can search for it.
thank you alan |

that was nicknamed the 'wife-saver' set;
I thought it was a FANTASTIC idea; Those gears are extremely rare these days though - I tried sourcing them from a couple vendors five or six years ago, and I think between them, only one of the gears was found. I'd describe it more as a three speed with overdrive; iirc the gear spread was something like an auto, with it using 1-2-4, then third which became the new 4th was overdriven.

There was a gear set made in Italy some years ago that had a .85 4th gear.I had a set in my 69 bird with a 3.31 in the back.The only rub is it was only available with a 2.20 first.The trans is now in the hands of a member in TX.For my money my next street rans will be the McLeod 5 speed.Fits in place of a Muncie.Tom

Similar to what was done in some of the air cooled bug transaxles in the 60's. One we have here is .84 4th gear.
It works pretty good in something that was designed around it, but converting something like the Muncie poses some drawbacks. Tom mentioned one of them being they only offered it with a 2.20 first gear. I don't think they were ever a big seller and as a result they are few and far between now. Like Tom, my money goes with a 5 speed swap every time. |

I could put a 4L80E in a car and have plenty of money left over, also take tons more abuse than a Muncie 4 speed will ever take. Muncie 4 speeds breaking, and changing clutches frequently, in the early 70s is why I switched to all automatics in my performance cars, and oval track race cars. Seems I liked driving them more than laying under them repairing carnage.

Since stock stuff isn't a drop in deal with anything I do here, I can't do a 4l80E here cheaper than that. Just having the converter built is $1,000 alone LOL

Can't understand why a stick muscle car guy would even consider a auto unless he gets too old to push the clutch in?Tom

The Camaro is my wife's car. When we went looking for the "right" car for me to build for her, the requirments were:
V8 Manual transmission If the car had AC, that was a bonus... |

My wife has been shifting a manual trans as well for decades. Her latest was a 2011 5.0 Mustang GT 6-speed. She spent all the Trans Am money she had been saving when Pontiac went out of business.

Yeah, a 4 speed adds 4 inches to your manhood, and a 5 speed 5 inches, etc. etc.....
Just wanna ask one question, how many times did someone lose a race by missing a gear in an automatic? I know I never missed one in mine, but I did when I ran 4 speed cars, I lost races too. In 1973 when I owned my first T400 with a Trans Go kit, and a switch pitch T400 from a buick in it. There wasn't a 4 speed GM transmission that could stand 450 HP shifting wide open repeatedly. If I hadn't went to an T400, the next transmission would have been a ford top loader. The rear axle would have been a change to a 58 Pontiac 9.5 rear axle. Ford 9 inch axles weren't the bulletproof go to at that time. I broke almost every stick transmission that fit into a GTO (ST 10 M20 M21 M21HD, never was able to find an M22, but they break too) plus the rear axles with frequency. Not only did I break my stuff, friends with 4 speeds regularly broke theirs. With the T400 I quit breaking the 8.2 rear axles because of the softened load, and no more exploded transmissions or worn out clutches. I was tired of buying parts, and laying under the car all the time fixing driveline pieces. Besides the multiple GTOs I owned, I also owned a 73 G/A 4 speed with a M21 HD, when the clutch went out of it at 40,000 miles the T400 went in it. You guys should drive semis if you like to shift gears that much. I drove big truck for 8 years and I'm fine with selecting drive in almost everything I own, except my IH wrecker, and my F750 dump truck W/2 speed rear axle, both 5 speeds. I can drive a stick just fine, I choose not to put up with all the drawbacks associated with it. If you're paying $1000 for a 4L80E convertor, you might want to do some shopping, then $2000 plus, for a transmission on top of that... $1800 ought to get you both pieces, but what do I know? obviously not much |

Most of the guys I knew who were breaking 4 speeds and cooking clutches were lousy manual transmission drivers. They were just meant to drive automatics.
