Default GTO on Magnum P.I.

Just saw a Magnum rerun that had a white 1970 GTO in it.

It was used in several chase scenes. It was chasing Magnum & the guys were shooting at him.

This has probably been mentioned here many times, & everybody but me has probably known about it for 35 + years.

They eventually rammed it into another car, & appeared to crunch the front up a bit. Not a total, by any means.

It has been mentioned here but it was quite a while ago. If you watch those shows from the 1970s close enough (like Magnum, Rockford Files, Adam-12 and others), a lot of the same cars will show up in the background shots, they all came from the same car pool maintained by the studios.

I remember that episode.... My wife and I enjoy watching those old TV shows (older than Magnum) and watching what goes by in the background. Just saw an Adam 12 that had a Pontiac dealership with a line of 70 Firebirds in the background.

"I Dream of Jeanie" was always good for some Pontiac sightings, and "Bewitched" for Chevy ...

Saw that too about the Pontiac Dealership - did you see any Trans Ams driving around - watch Adam 12 most everyday - theres a white 70 GTO they show every once in awhile

I think Pontiac was a sponsor for Jeanie, right? Major Nelson always drove one.

I read somewhere that's the exact same car that was in the Magnum PI episode.

Phone rang one evening. Walt. "Archie, Can you bring "Kitty"(our 67 blue GTO convertible) up here tomorrow? " And Walt (Walt Hollifield) went on to explain his scheme. So, off Rebecca and I drive to Charlotte. Spent the night at Walt's. Next day,Walt, with a big conspiratorial grin on his face, hands us two VIP passes to the track and pits. You could tell he was right tickled with himself as he went on to say" Archie,Larry Hagman is the Grand Marshall for this race(UAW-GM 500). I want you to take Miz Kitty on up to the track. Take her down into the pits. Ask where the parade cars are and then drive over there." Uh,alright Walt but why",I replied. His grin getting bigger Walt said,"Look Archie, the Corvette club is providing the cars for the Grand Marshall's lap and I really want to show them up,so you and Rebecca just take Miz Kitty on up there." OK. Tickets to a Nascar race. Pit passes. . Free. Courtesy of Walt. Why not?
So away we go. Miz Kitty all shiny. Top down. Boot over folded top.Get to the track . All goes to plan . We find the parade cars. All Corvettes....mostly late 50s through 60s. Classics. Gorgeous. Except us. One Pontiac.
And ,lo! There he was..bigger than life...JR Ewing ...The captain(or was it major?) from "I Dream of Jeannie". Tall. Ten gallon cowboy hat. Grinning. Shaking hands and slapping backs. He is strolling around having a good time with no particular place or thing to go and do except have a good time before he rides around the track. And he starts to wander over our way. And he spots Kitty. Bee line right to us. Introduces himself and his wife,Mag. " Yessir,I sure wanted one of these when we did the show("I Dream Of Jeannie"). Figured they(meaning GM I suppose. Or maybe the studio) but they never did" Chatted for a while. Nice guy. his wife, too.
Someone summons him to get ready to ride in the Grand Marshall's lap. Fellow in a brimmed straw hat with Corvette sweatband come up and attempts to escort him and his wife to a gleaming classic Corvette. Larry Hagman looks at him and firmly remarks,"No. I'm not riding that car. I'm riding in THIS car! " as he pats Miz Kitty's left rear quarter panel'. And so he did. And his wife. Told us some funny stories as we rode around past the chicken bone section of the stands. Walt really steamed the Queen City Corvette Club on this one. A True Story.
