A Little Retro Snowmobile Action
I just bought a 1982 Yamaha 340 ET that is in unbelievable shape. Starts on the first pull and has no dents, scratches, or tears anyplace. The stickers are on it and not one of them is torn or scratched. Every light works including the dash lights. It had 2010 miles on it when I picked it up.
Picked it up for cheap for my kids to tool around on in the winter. It is the same model and year that I would have ridden when I was their age. Fun little machine! I need a rubber hood strap and metal hook. Anyone know where to look for older parts?

Those ET's are almost indestructible, I had a 79 ET 300 when I was a kid. any snowmobile salvage yard should be able to hook you up with those parts. Or I would try craigslist, they used that strap for many years on Yamaha sleds and there are plenty of people parting them out.
I looked up the part and it still looks like it available from Yamaha, the number is 8G5-77170-00-00 and it's $12.95. portyamaha.com has a great website with a micro fiche that is easy to look up parts |

Thanks for the tips. Dennis Kirk had the hood straps and a new red kill switch cover to replace the old faded one. I also just ordered a new dimmer switch cover off ebay. Those are the only parts needed. Fun little machine!
With three kids, now I need another matching one... Gary want to sell one? LOL

Growing up, we had a Sno Flite. Had a 292 JLO engine. They were bought out by WheelHorse.

I had three '74 Chaparral SSX Sled, the orange ones with the Zenoah 440 cc. liquid cooled engines. The neighbors and friends had eight more Chaparrals. I did all the repairs on them, which was a full-time job.
The '74 SSX had features no other snowmobiles had until years later. They used an involute drive rubber track with slide suspension. The engine was a choice of a liquid-cooled dual Mikuni carbed 340 or 440 Zenoah rated at 40 and 50 hp respectively. They also had a handy reserve fuel tank that held a little less than a gallon of fuel in case you ran out. There was a "reserve fuel" knob to pull to get you an extra 10 miles or so. I used that feature several times to get to a gas station. Al & Bobby Unser raced Chaparrals in the early '70's until 1973 when they showed up at the World Championship Races in Eagle River, WI with sleds that had independent front suspension. The top Armco Steel executives were there to see the Unsers mop up the field. But, race officials decided not to allow the Chaparrals to run because they were "too aerodynamic" compared to production sleds. That January, Armco pulled the plug on their snowmobile program. To bad, because they were the most advanced sleds of their time.

When not playing with Pontiac's my son(mostly) restore, show and race vintage snowmobiles. Have them setting in our family room. Race Roll-O-flex's. If someone said there where 150 manufactures that would only be close. Sometimes only two or three prototypes would be made and no production. But there out there. Boy found an Allouette 650RX factory racer awile back. Its like finding an original Super Duty car for pennies on a dollar and I do mean pennies. They actually have shows in the summer. Not able to make Eagle River Word Champion this year but they had over 1000 race entries last yr. for the Vintage Weekend.

Cool pics. If I lived up north I would be into the vintage sleds too.

Have 40+ vintage sleds here. My favorite and all around fast sled is a 79 440 TX. Nothing better than a Polaris engine and clutch combo.

I put 700 miles last year on a 1977 el tigre 5000 500 free air. we gps'd it at 78 mph...sold it month ago and upgraded to a 2012 arctic cat xf 800 high country..
those chapparals are neat sleds. buddy of mine is on the tails of a massey 440 triple cyclone with 20 miles on it and a Yamaha srx. they are in central Manitoba....

My old sled was an 81 John Deere 300 Spitfire. It was a great little sled, pretty quick for what it was and was one of the faster sleds on a tight trail since it was light.

My friends and I have a vintage weekend we have been doing for the past five years, it has quickly become one of our favorite trips of the winter. We have a blast and the conversations we have we other snowmobiles is great. We even have a little cook out in the woods. I put 150 miles on my 76 MERC Twister last year.

My kids have put 50 miles on the Yamaha 340 just doing circles in our yard and a friends yard. People look at this sled and can't believe how good of shape its in. Fun stuff, especially this year with 18+ inches of show on the ground. We haven't had snow like this in 20+ years.

I knew vintage sleds were of interest. I own a high end wide format printing company and we have had people over the years come in to see if we could reproduce one-off factory stickers for their snowmobile restorations.
